The Heaton Lab is seeking an experienced technician to conduct research on the mechanisms underlying influenza A virus pathogenesis.  The laboratory principally uses molecular virology techniques to ask questions about mechanisms of viral disease and immunity.  We use a range of experimental systems including biochemical assays, cell culture, primary tissue culture and animal models. Scientific project possibilities for the position include defining viral restriction factors, understanding how the lung repairs itself after viral infection, and/or the development of antiviral vaccines and therapeutics.

The individual occupying this position is expected to:

1.   Devote~10% of their time to lab administrative tasks such as ordering and lab organization

2.   Devote~10% of their time to the preparation of general laboratory regents such as media and stock solutions

3.   Devote~80% of their time to scientific research. While the specific details will vary by the project, the individual is expected to perform a variety of technical assays involved in the execution of biological research.  Under the supervision of the principle investigator, they will also compile, analyze, document and draw tentative conclusions from experimental results. Optimally, as the individual develops more skills and abilities, they will perform their research more independently.

Applicants should have a BS or equivalent degree in a relevant field (e.g. microbiology, genetics, immunology, cell biology or biochemistry). At least one year of full-time research experience (Microbiology and/or Virology experience preferred) and working knowledge of standard molecular biology and biochemical techniques such as cloning and protein purification, as well as experience with cell culture is required.
